The City Council and I see workforce and economic development as a top priority. Working for the City of Garland for nearly 30 years has given me a broad perspective of the businesses that serve our community. Through my continuing visits with Garland’s top 100 businesses, I have been able to gain even more insight into the needs and concerns of these important community
stakeholders.
As the eighth largest manufacturing city in Texas, Garland leaders were instrumental in establishing the Dallas County Manufacturers Association (DCMA) in 2006. The mission of the DCMA is to provide the manufacturing community in Garland and beyond with the best possible opportunities to grow, compete and succeed in the global marketplace through providing resources for qualified workforce, training, and advocacy at the local, state, and national level. A primary focus is to provide a forum for collaboration among members by the sharing of knowledge and best practices.
The City of Garland is proud to be a part of DCMA and to work with our businesses and industry to create growth opportunities. An example of that cooperative spirit was demonstrated as Mapei Corporation officially unveiled its expanded warehouse and production facilities on November 4. Mapei has been in Garland since 1992 and employs 113 people. The City granted tax abatement incentives and supported the creation of a Texas Enterprise Zone to support this expansion project. Mapei’s expansion will create another 28 quality jobs and create a total of $139,000 in revenue to the City and $254,000 to Garland ISD. This is just one example of the important role our business and industry play in our community.
